Roshan Pilapitiya was born on 21 March 1975 in Hanguranketha city, near Kandy, Sri Lanka. He resides in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has been active as an Actor and Singer in the entertainment industry since 1988. His father is Ariya Abhayasinghe, a tea plantation owner. His mother is Mallika Pilapitiya, a retired actress who died on 26 March 2022. He has two elder brothers, Kapila and Chathura, and one elder sister, Thrishara. He dated famous actress Chathurika Pieris from 2001-2013. He married Ridma Perera on 10 December 2017 and has a son named Rahul. He completed his primary education at C. C. College, Hanguranketha and secondary education at Dharmaraja College, Kandy. In 1988, he was the school's best drama crew member. He also won the Inter-School Best Actor Award in 1988.

He worked in a musical band during the 1987-89 JVP insurrection period. He performed in the Red Heart band as a singer, guitarist, and Keyboard player. He made his acting debut with Lester James Peries' teledrama Golu Hadawatha (1988), for which he won a Presidential Award in the Best Upcoming Actor Category in 2002. He made his film debut with Disco Girl in 1990. He played a lead role in the Hatharadenaama Soorayo remake in 2008. He was the main lead in many successful projects, such as Mandakini (1999), Dhana Rina (2007), Daru Upatha (2001), Rajjumala (2004), and Ek Murgaanganaawiyak (1999).

He has won many awards, which include Best Actor in Sumathi Awards (2005), Most Popular Actor in Sumathi Tele Awards in 2003 and 2004, Best Upcoming Actor in Sarasaviya Awards (2002), Dharmaraja Abhinandana Award (2001), and Best Upcoming Actor in Sumathi Awards (2000).
