Janaka Kumbukage is a Sri Lankan actor famous in cinema, stage drama and television. He was born to retired teachers. Janaka frequently moved schools due to his parents’ transfers. He studied at Wadduwa Madya Maha Vidyalaya where he developed an interest in drama. He did his A/L in the commerce stream. He studied business Studies for four years at Technical College, Maradana. He worked at the Milk Board. He got married to Anusha in 1994. He started his career in drama in 1984 at Gamini Haththotwuwegama’s dramatic workshops.
He was then a part of his street drama group. He worked alongside Dharmasiri Bandaranayake, Somaltha Subasinghe, Asoka Handagama and Klauz Coozemberg – a German playwright. Janaka won the best stage actor in 2000 for the play Beehama Buhami in the State Drama Festival. He also acted in Siva Rahasa Pura directed by Wimalarante Adikari. He directed Sulanga Mata Katha Karai in 2009. The play was staged on July 25th and 26th at the Lumbini Theatre, Colombo. He started his career as a film actor in 1996 with Sihina Deshayen directed by Boodee Keerthisena.
