Hemasiri Liyanage is a renowned and talented actor, dramatist, director, and teacher, mainly active in the Sri Lankan theatre, television, and film industry. He was born on 25 December 1942 in Nahalla village of Bulathsinhala, Sri Lanka, and his real name is Hemasiri Dhanawatha Liyanage. Hemasiri went to Vidyarathana College, Horana, for graduation. In 1964, Hemasiri got selected to University of Kelaniya for graduation in arts. In his university life, he formed a drama organization named National Drama Corporation. He married Kusuma Liyanage, a retired teacher and has four children: Saumya Liyange - an actor, Saman - an artist Aloka Liyange - a doctor and Indrachapap Liyange - a rock musician.
After graduation, Hemasiri Liyanage started his career as a teacher at Vidyarathana College, Horana. He was an economics teacher and taught drama as an additional subject, but he had to quit teaching in 1980 due to political disputes in the country. Chithrage Prema Kathwa, staged in 1982, was the final stage drama by Hemasiri Liyanage. He debuted in the Sinhala television industry in 1997 with a biography drama Tv movie, Mother Teresa: In The Name of God's Poor. It has directed by Kevin Connor and starred Geraldine Chaplin, Keene Curtis, Helena Coroll, and others and premiered on 5 October 1997. Some of the notable Tv series in which Hemasiri Liyanage performed excellent roles are Amba Yahaluvo, Eka Iththaka Mal, Sanda Dev Diyani, Idorayaka Mal Pipila, Sindu Kiyana Una Pandura, Thattu Gewal, Kokila Sandwaniya, Ayal, Thanamalvila Kollek, Dahas Gawdura, and many more. Hemasiri Liyanage debuted in the Sinhala cinema in 1983 through a small role in Siri Kularathna's film, Niliyakata Pem Kalemi. He played cameos at the beginning of his career in the film industry.
