Buddhadasa Withanachchi

Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi is a renowned Sri Lankan actor working primarily in Sinhala stage drama, movies and Tv series. He was born on 30 July 1947 in Kegalle, Sri Lanka and completed his schooling at St. Mary's College, Kegalle. Buddhadasa was passionate about acting from an early age and participated in theatre events at his school. He married Sitha Lalani Hemamala, his long-time partner, and has two daughters, Priyanwada and Sulochana and a son, Siddhartha. Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi came to Colombo in the early 70s to pursue a career in the acting and drama field.

He joined Lionel Wendt Theater to learn and practice stage drama. He started working in the Sinhala television industry with Jayantha Chandrasiri's show, Dandubasna Manaya. Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi debuted in the Sinhala film industry in 1978 with a minor role in Veera Puran Appu, directed by Lester James Peiris. In the beginning, he played minor roles in several movies, like Guru Gedara (1993), Maruthaya (1995), Anantha Rathriya and Sihina Deshayen (1996), Channa Kinnari (1998), and Dorakada Marawa (1998).

In 2002, he played his first notable role in Jayantha Chandrasiri's film, Agnidahaya. Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi has also been a part of a few radio plays like Tharuwan Saranai and Nirabhisheka.

He also presented weekend programs for around 15 years on Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, a National Television Network of Sri Lanka. In 1960 Buddhadasa entered the political network and joined Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). He won the elections from the Gampaha district of Sri Lanka in 1981 under JVP. He got prisoned for one and a half years at Welikada Prison in 1987 during Indo-Sri Lanka Accord. He became a member of the National Freedom Front in 1989 under the leadership of Wimal Weerawansa. Later in 2010, he resigned from politics. Buddhadasa Vithanarachchi is a versatile and talented actor in the Sri Lanka film industry with the prominent past and upcoming projects.
