Haraprasad Das is an Indian essayist, columnist and poet in the Odia language. He was born on the 15th of January 1946. His birthplace is Banapur, a town in the Khordha district of Odisha. He is married to Sandhya Mahapatra. He used to be a civil servant in the Indian Bureaucracy. He has also worked with many United Nations organisations as an expert. His work at the UN took him to many different places worldwide, such as Geneva, London, Nairobi, Warsaw, Bangkok, Buenos Aires and Hague. His work in poetry spreads across 16 volumes. 3 out of these 16 volumes are epics. He has won many awards for his poetry throughout his life so far.

These awards include Kalinga Literary Award, Moortidevi Award, Gangadhar Meher Award and Sarala Award. He also won the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for Odia writers. One of his most notable works is Vamsha. He has written twelve works of poetry and four works of prose. Also, one of his works is in fiction and he has worked on three translations. His time serving as an expert in the United Nations has granted him a greater understanding of human beings and our temperaments. He very skillfully presents these understandings in his poems. His poems are full of hope and mostly revolve around how even though human beings face failure, fantasies and delusions; humanity still manages to survive.

Haraprasad Das is considered to be a very innovative poet. This is because his poems are sometimes cynical and sometimes romanticised. Sometimes his poems display rebelliousness and sometimes show the calm beauty of life. Therefore, he is a very versatile poet. The Sahitya Akademi, an organisation dedicated to promoting literature in Indian languages, made a documentary film on Haraprasad Das directed by Venkat Parsa. The documentary called Haraprasad Das a Neo-classical, modernist, post-modernist Odia poet. His work romanticises some parts of life and points out the cold hard facts in other parts of life. His work is deeply philosophical. He resides in Bhubaneswar in Odisha, with his wife.
