He was born on January 16,1936, in Baripada, Mayurbhanj district in Odisha. Shantanu Mohapatra's musical journey began at a young age under the tutelage of Guru Banchhanidhi Panda. By the age of eight, he had already started performing on stage, showcasing his outstanding talent. Mohapatra graduated from IIT Kharagpur in Applied Geology and Geophysics. He discovered his passion for music and became associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), where he honed his skills in group music. He learned the art of music direction from Salil Chowdhury.

He debuted as an Odia movie music composer with the film " Suryamukhi Story soon >> Read More... ." Throughout his career, he composed music for more than 1,600 songs which made him one of the most prolific composers of his time. His versatility as a composer was evident in his ability to create mesmerizing melodies across various languages, including Odia, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, and Telugu. His contributions to the music industry extended beyond films. He composed the first modern Odia ballad, 'Konark Gatha.'

With a remarkable portfolio of over 1,900 compositions, including feature and telefilms, Jatras, dramas, and dance dramas, Mohapatra's musical genius attracted audiences and earned him widespread acclaim. Throughout his career, he received several honors and awards, including the prestigious Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 2004, the Odisha Film Critics Award in 1995, and the Mother Teresa Millennium Award in 2005.
