Nepali Singer Kunti Moktan

Kunti Moktan is a famous singer who belongs to Nepal. She was born on 11 July 1962 in Margaret’s Hope Tea Estate in Darjeeling, India. Her father’s name is Prem Kumar Sundas, and her mother’s name is Bishnu Maya Sundas. She did her high school level education in Kurseong. She used to play football during her school days. She was part of the first women’s football team from Darjeeling. Later, she went to Kathmandu, Nepal, in 1983 to pursue her music career. Later, she married Shila Bahadur Moktan, a Nepali Musician and lyricist in 1983. The couple has two daughters, namely Shital Moktan and Subani Moktan. Both are musicians. She is a good classical singer and sings Nepali Folk songs and various modern songs. She is famous for her folk songs such as Nishthuri Mayalu, and Mathi Mathi Sailungey Ma.

She sings in collaboration with her husband. She also teaches music in various schools. She started singing early and started her journey from St. Xavier’s High School in Dilaram, India. In class 8th, she passed the vocal test at All India Radio station in Kurseong. She recorded her first song with them at the age of 15 and also her second song for Radio Nepal when she was just 18 years old in 1980. The couple learned music from Jagdish Chandra Rai in Sonada. She came to Kathmandu in 1980 for the first time to sing at the birthday celebration of King Mahendra, and then permanently settled there. She has performed in about 20 countries like India, the United States, Japan, the UK, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Germany and South Korea. She plays harmonium efficiently.

She is known for her songs like Khutta Tandai Gra, Choli Ramro Palpali Dhakakao, Sunkai Bhau Chha, Mathi Mathi Sailungey Ma, Bhanchan Kohi Jindagi Yo and Dali Dali Ma. She is honoured with numerous awards, namely Chinnalata Geet Puraskar, Nepal; Nirman Samman, Sikkim; Hits FM Music Award, Nepal; Bhupalman Dingh Yuba Puraskar, Nepal; and Budha Subba Music Award respectively. She has sung various singles also, namely, Pahadi Pyara (2018), Gothalo Jada (feat Subani Moktan (2020) and Timro Bhaye Pugcha (2020). She is famous for her various albums like Mero Man (1996), Kirti (2000), Kusum (2003), Manko Sapana (2008), Sailunge (2008), Kamero (2009), Birsi Janelia (2010), Kahile Kahi (2010), Hamro Bhet (2013), and Koseli (2020).
