Nepali Dancer JD Tamu

JD Tamu’s full name is Jagdish Gurung. He is a Nepali choreographer, dancer, filmmaker, and also a camera enthusiast. JD Tamu is the son of two farm laborers. He hails from Ilam’s Ingla village. He completed his diploma course in Contemporary Dance at Terence Lewis Professional Training Institute Mumbai. He is pursuing his career living in Kathmandu. He continues to express his stories through his photography, dance, and vlogging. 

JD Tamu was raised in a joint family of eighteen members. He is the eldest son of his parents. From a very young age, he had to shoulder family responsibilities. His parents worked as agricultural laborers. Occasionally, JD Tamu also worked with them and got paid rupees eight. Apart from working with his parents, he was responsible for cooking for the family and also getting fodder for the family’s livestock. After completing his secondary school studies, he went to live with his maternal uncle in the nearby town of Jhapa, to pursue his higher education. He wanted to join a martial arts class. However, he decided to enroll in music classes to learn singing at a center in Birtamod. Later, he developed an interest in dance and decided to opt for dance classes.

JD Tamu worked as a part-time teacher to earn money so that he could enroll in dance classes. The class was led by Bhutanese refugee Chandra Chamling who would become JD Tamu’s dance mentor. He spent a year trying to convince his parents to let him pursue a dance career. After that, he took three-month classes from his guru Chandra Chamling, at the Bhutanese refugee camp in Goldhap, Jhapa. Later, he went to Kolkata in India, to pursue a diploma course in dance at Dance World International. He was the only candidate from Nepal who was selected for the digital audition.

After completing his diploma, JD Tamu returned to Nepal and began conducting dance workshops. He developed an interest in photography & videography after meeting with a film director Prakash Angdembe in one of his workshops. He then began learning cinematography and direction. In 2018, after completing his diploma course at Terence Lewis Professional Training Institute Mumbai, he was selected as a frontline dancer for Disney Aladdin Musical. JD Tamu has worked in “Alladin,” a Disney Production show, which was a big deal for him. Also, he has taken part in many dance reality shows such as Dancing with the Stars and Boogie Woogie Nepal. As a dance choreographer, he worked on several music videos and half a dozen theatre plays.

JD Tamu conducts contemporary dance workshops for actors taking theatre classes. He also works as a dance instructor for many dance academies. Dancing star Nepal’s winner Chiring Sherpa and JD Tamu set a World Record for the "Highest Altitude Choreographed Duet Dance" at Kalapathar in the Everest region. They performed their dance at the fifty-six hundred meter height of Kalapathar, which is the highest peak of Mount Everest. They did various Nepal folk dances like Sakela, Maruni, Tamangselo, Jhaure, and Syabru.
