Surya Kumar Neupane, professionally known as Uttam Neupane, is a Nepali sound mixer, sound editor, and sound designer. Uttam was born on 10th of February 1987, in Rautahat. He has worked on British, German, and Nepali films. Uttam also contributed to a short film titled Dadyaa which earned a nomination for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, and he received a Special Jury Award. Furthermore, he has collaborated with CNN journalist Benjamin Best on the documentary film Dirty Games, which achieved recognition by winning the Feature Award at the Hollywood International Independent Documentary Awards in 2016. It also received the accolade for Best Documentary at the Snowdance Independent Film Festival and the New York Festivals.
Uttam also played a role in the production of Talakjung vs. Tulke, directed by Nischal Basnet Nischal Basnet is a famous Nepali actor, writer, d >> Read More... , which was chosen as Nepal’s official submission in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 88th Academy Awards. Furthermore, Neupane and Basnet have teamed up on projects such as Loot, 2012, and Loot 2. He is also recognized for his contributions to Bulbul 2019, directed by Binod Poudel, Nepal’s official submission for the Best International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards. Additionally, Bulbul received the Special Jury Award at the 9th SAARC Film Festival.
Uttam collaborated with Iranian writer-director Fateme Ahmadi on her film Chandra, which was overseen by the Japanese film director Naomi Kawase. The film achieved notable recognition, winning the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Cannes Film Festival for Radiance 2017 film. It also received a Special Mention for Tarachime at the Locarno Film Festival in 2006. Chandra was officially selected to be screened at various international festivals, including the Palm Springs Short Fest, Sao Paulo Cork, Molodist, Flicker’s Rhode Island, London Short Film Festival, and Open Doors Locarno.
Uttam also contributed to sound mixing for the first-ever Nepali science fiction film, Bijuli Machine, which had the honor of being chosen as the opening film at the 2017 Tasveer South Asian Film Festival in Seattle and received recognition as the best narrative film of that year. Additionally, it was showcased at the Singapore South Asian International Film Festival and earned a spot at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival.
