Ashwathy Kurup, popularly known as Parvathy Menon, was born to a couple in Kaviyoor, Thiruvalla. She was second of the three children. While she completed her primary education at the same school where her mother was a mathematics teacher, she graduated from NSS Hindu College, Changanacherry, with a Bachelors of Science and was a vivacious Mohiniyattam Dancer. It was here that she first got introduced to a camera. Though her first film was shelved, she made her debut at the age of 16 in 1986 with Vivahitare Itihile, directed by Balachandra Menon. With a short-lived career in the industry (1986-1993), Parvathy has 64 major and minor roles in Malayalam movies to her credit. It was during the shoot of her movie, Aparan that she first met her now husband, Jayaram.
