The story is set in the 1980s in South India. The story revolves around a 7-year-old boy, Anand, also called Dabba. He lives with his family in Madurai. His father works in railways, and his mother is a housewife. Dabba has a very modest family. Dabba is an interesting kid. He is different than others. His thoughts are different from other kids his age. Other kids may think about toys and food. But he thinks about ways to be rich or his next level of naughtiness. He is interested in doing big things that surprise his family. He is always involved in achieving fancy things. His father is practical. He always snaps Dabba to reality. Dabba brings life to their railway colony. He is an extrovert child who can talk to anyone and interest them.

He dreams of becoming a magnet king when boys from convent school ask him to make magnets from coins. He attempts to rob a train because he hears that the boogies have imported chocolate. Dabba also forms a detective agency to catch thieves. He gets so obsessed with drumming that he runs away from home to join an orchestra. Dabba is a naughty kid, and these incidents are one of many. In a world without mobiles, TV, and the internet, this is a heartwarming story of lives beyond materialistic things. It is a nostalgic tale about childhood, imagination, and adventures.
