3. Ananya Chatterjee

Ananya-Chatterjee.jpg Those who have traced the career of the National Award winning Bengali actress Ananya Chatterjee from the beginning can vouch for it that she can be equally adroit in lighter roles than the ones like that in “Abahoman” that fetched the award. The credit for identifying her real talent and putting her on the national stage goes to someone like Rituporno Ghosh. Earlier in life, her interest in dance had made her join Mamata Shankar’s dance institution almost side by side with her foray into acting. Almost all of her acting was restricted to the small screen, whether it be for soap operas or the more refined telefilms. She seemed to have caught the eye of a talented director like Anjan Dutta, who cast her in a series of telefilms that he had made at that period. Her entry to the big screen commenced with Basu Chatterjee's “TakJhalMishti” in 2002. Her next films, spread over the next 3 to 4 years, were from different genres “Raat Barota Paanch” being a thriller and “Aamra” being a comedy. By this time she was also acquiring a name for being considered for the more “arty” films, and its immediate fallout was her being selected for “ Probhu Nashto Hoye Jai” which, incidentally, was screened for the first time at the 13th Kolkata Film Festival. In a landmark role in 2009, she could match her acting wits withthe legendary Soumitra Chatterjee in “Dwando”, followed by a remarkable performance in “Mama Bhagne”. All this were, however, forerunners for the real one that got her the National award. She followed that up with an equally remarkable role in the 2012 re-make of “Meghe Dhaka Tara”. At this time she also performed the lead role in the popular Bengali serial “Subarnolata” on Zee Bangla, bringing all her acting talents to the fore, in this sensitive role.
