Plot

Star Performances

Sarjano Khalid is not well known for method acting. However, he does surprise us with his unconventional performance this time.

Apart from him, Anagha Narayanan is decent in her portrayal of Shahana.

Analysis

Survival drama is a genre not often explored in Malayalam cinema. However, Aneesh Anwar took the daunting task of making one with 'Raastha,' apart from encashing on the sentiments of the Malayali expats in the Gulf. Not bad, right?

If the makers intended to make a gripping, emotional survival drama, they failed at it. Melodrama, awkward transitions, predictable tropes, you have it all. Not once do you develop any feelings for any character. Ironically, this movie was lauded by many critics only days before the film hit the theaters.

'Raastha' is a movie that aimed to be as gripping as the 2017 movie ' Take Off Click to look into! >> Read More... '. Sadly, it turned out otherwise. The film aimed at several targets but managed very few of them.

Interestingly, this movie draws inspiration from the treacherous terrains of the inhospitable Rub al Khali desert. However, despite the decent cinematography and the graphics, the movie just fails to evoke a compelling narrative. Thanks to a meandering first half, 'Raastha' feels like a never-ending drag despite being only 2 hours and 10 minutes long.

The second half is no better. Aneesh Anwar is well known for being slightly melodramatic as a filmmaker. However, this time, he took it a bit too far. For instance, the entry into survival drama from a search operation seems forced. The events due to which an NRI like Faisal gets stranded are also unnatural. Did Aneesh watch 'Comrade in America' before writing his script? Seems likely.

The soundtrack is also far from impressive. Only one song by Sooraj Santhosh Sooraj Santhosh is a multilingual versatile playba >> Read More... tried to evoke some sentiments, but that was not enough. While the lead pair did make some efforts towards an honest portrayal, the others were plain unimpressive.

What's There:

• Only some performances from Sarjano Khalid and Anagha Narayanan

What's Not There:

• Incoherent plot

• Bizarre sequences

• Lack of emotional engagement

• Creatively lazy effort

• Predictable tropes that only make the narrative bland

Verdict

Aneesh Anwar's 'Raastha' is a half-hearted attempt to create a nerve-wrenching survival drama. The script had potential, but the execution and the melodramatic efforts of the acting crew made it a forgettable experience. Watch it if you a have a lot of time on your hands!
