Plot

On 20 May 1991, two people are killed by a man. They are followed by a few others, including a scholar, who was a witness to the killings. Who is this killer? Why he is after so many people? Will anyone survive his wrath?

Star Performances

The only good thing about this film to be honest is Avinash Gupta, who plays the role of the mysterious killer. He is probably the only guy in this film, who was remotely interested in this job.

Analysis

Imagine you have a story at hand. You decide to give it a touch of mystery. You even set the film in the early 90s. Yet, your film appears like an amateurish sketch, that would make even the prime-time news broadcast appear livelier.

This is ‘Gin ke Dus’ in a nutshell. The makers had a winner in their heads. They even set it around the pre-liberalization era, to give it a more authentic touch. The identity of the killer was already a mystery. All the makers needed to do was ensure that the story was intriguing and thought-provoking.

However, it was at this point that Sareesh Sudhakaran, who serves as the film’s all-rounder [writer, producer, director, cinematographer, and even editor], gave up. He made the screenplay so contorted and convoluted that despite the film being barely above 2 hours long, it was anything but impressive. The camerawork was not just below average, the jump cuts and the transitions almost made this film unbearable after a point.

There was hardly any thrill, forget the chills that are associated with such a film. The narrative seemed endless, often testing the patience of the viewers. At one point, people are so bored that by the time the motive of the killer is revealed, they have just given up.

The actors have also left an underwhelming oppression. None of them even tried to be remotely nuanced. The only person who tried to salvage this film somehow was Avinash Gupta, who played the role of the mysterious killer. Except for him, there is almost nothing worth watching.

Verdict

‘Gin Ke Dus’ is a movie that had an innovative idea for a change. If the idea was given the proper platform, it would have made for an intriguing watch. The execution, is, however, best left forgotten. Only the performance of the main antagonist somehow makes this film slightly watchable.
