Plot

In Slack Bay, the story begins with a series of bizarre and mysterious disappearances of wealthy tourists who come to the area for vacation. The van Peteghems who are rich and inbred industrialists, are visiting their summer mansion above the bay. The Bruforts, on the other side of the creek are a fisherfolk with an unusual diet who also ferry people across the bay. The tension between these two families escalates as the disappearances continues. As the story progresses the local police, investigate the disappearances, leading to increasingly absurd, and surreal situations.

Star performance

In this film, Fabrice Luchini takes on the role of wealthy, eccentric patriarch of the Brufort family with quite characteristic wit and charm. His performance stands outstandingly for its timings and presence. Juliette Binoche adds a touching performance as the sophisticated and eccentric matriarch. Her acting is tinged with elements of pathos intermingled with humour to produce the required offbeat tone in the film. Raph, an amateurish actor, turns in quite a striking, unsettling performance. Overall, his performance takes center place for the dark comedy and surreal atmosphere of the movie.

Analysis

Lots of things and means come into Slack Bay, so we have an original and thrilling movie. The director draws on exaggerated visuals, non-traditional framing, and other means, which are included in the film's general atmosphere, and thus it is generally unique and dreamy. Dumont went for a combination of trained actors and non-professionals which fuelled speed and spontaneity in the actings. His way of filmmaking is funny, horrific, absurd, and black comedy and they are balanced out by it too. The cinematographer Guillaume Deffontaines, perfectly enhances the atmosphere quality with striking visuals. The film’s aesthetics have been well maintained by the production designer using appropriate props, costume and location. The music by Christophe complements the dark comedies and also adds the depth in emotions. Editing has fulfilled most of the visions of Dumont by aligning the movie scenes creatively and also bringing the thrill to audience.
