British movie Monsters hit the screens in 2010. The movie is a science fiction and falls into the category of monster film. Edwards handled the camera, designed the production, and monitored the special effects. The events in the movie happen many years after a NASA plane crashed in Mexico after which gigantic monsters with tentacles made an appearance. Plot: The story revolves around Andrew Kaulder, an American photo-journo who sets out on a mission of standing by his boss’s daughter Samantha Wynden. He has to see her off safely in America after crossing the monster-infested zone in Mexico. Not alone that, the border is war-torn with American and Mexican army facing the worst ever herculean task of wiping out the creatures from the quarantined area.
The majority of the screen space is occupied by creatures. All that the monstrous appearances on screen could do is to remind better monster movies of the time. Also, there is ambiguity in the title ‘Monsters’. The movie seems to have a shade of metaphor explaining what it is to look at America from outside. The movie throws light on people who are plundering during the time of crisis. In fact, such people prove more insidious than the monsters. But, such people are kept at bay from the movie for several minutes of the runtime. At few junctures, McNairy and Able are unable to project confidence and do not make a good romantic pair on screen. Otherwise, McNairy does a good job as a photographer whose pain increases with every precious photograph he takes. There is plenty of money for the photos, and also pain while photographing gory deaths of innocent victims. The movie is a better one than any of the recent monster movies.
Verdict: The movie Monsters is a big STAR on the debutant director’s badge.
