The American-French documentary film Jodorowsky’s Dune hit the screens in 2013. Frank Pavich directed the movie.
Alejandro Jodorowsky is a director from Chile and made movies as EL TOPO and The Holy Mountain. Alejandro Jodorowsky directed cult films and tried his best to make a movie out of science fiction novel DUNE by Frank Herbert. Then, he commenced his dream venture. He made his 12-year-old son Brontis as a movie hero. The inspiration that the director drew from the science fiction DUNE could have changed his entire career. But, the project was finally dropped. The documentary about a failed attempt says a Namaste to creativity. The movie has interviews, and visuals are combined with those interviews. The documentary covers interviews with Alejandro Jodorowsky in which he relates his difficulty in completing the project. The documentary shows scripts and some patchworks that would have been a masterpiece if completed. Also, there are interviews with people involved in the moviemaking process. The movie brings before our eyes the passion that Jodorowsky had for his works. HR Giger and Giraud were ready to raise the settings. Pink Floyd too was ready to compose the music for the dream venture. The moviemaking did not materialize as technology had not made many advances during that time.
Other participants in the documentary as Seydoux and Giger make it clear for viewers how Jodorowsky tried to change the entire world through his vision of art.
But, audiences cannot make out whether the dream work would have been a masterpiece or a slipshod work. Director Pavich appears taken in by the subject. Also, he has not thrown light on the drawbacks.
Verdict: Jodorowsky’s Dune is a fine movie for those interested in knowing how directors aimed to make big movies.
