Plot 

The film’s protagonist is Kit, played by AnnaSophia Robb, a troublesome teenager who is sent by her mother to Blackwood Boarding School by her mother in hopes of her reform. There she meets her enigmatic headmistress Madame Duret, played by Uma Thurman, and is introduced to her classmates Ashley, Izzy, Veronica, and Sierra. The school is located in the middle of a forest and the students have no access to technology. The school has a dark, eerie atmosphere and forbidden rooms. Soon, Kit observes that her and her classmates have begun to change, obsessing over things. Izzy becomes obsessed with Maths, Ashley becomes obsessed with writing, Sierra becomes obsessed with painting, Kit becomes obsessed with piano, while the rebellious Veronica does not undergo such changes. Kit observes that they are slowly losing control over their obsessions and turning into someone else. The film follows Kit and Veronica as they try to unravel the school’s mystery and try to escape.  

Star Performance 

Uma Thurman is alluring as an enigmatic and charming Madame Duret. Anna Sophia Robb, Victoria Moroles, Rosie Day, Isabelle Fuhrman, and Taylor Russell also give spectacular performances as troubled, struggling teenagers.

Analysis 

The film has a great concept and a spectacular cast but fails at properly incorporating horror and thriller elements. The film is not paced well and the ending seemed rushed.

Verdict

The film, based on the book “Down A Dark Hall” by Lois Duncan is an alluring horror, thriller with great performances. Although the horror components are insufficient, the film would be a good watch for mystery, thriller enthusiasts.
