Senanayake was born in a village near the Avissawella area. He pursued his primary education at a school in Kudagama. Later, he attended Seethawaka Central College where he completed his secondary education. Following that, he graduated from Vidodaya University with a Degree in Arts. He began his career as a journalist and eventually became a chief editor.
His works, such as Yashoravaya, Mawakage Geethaya, Baladevage Lokaya, Irahanda Payana Loke, and Ambu Samiyo, are among the best works in Sri Lankan Literature. He has published a total of 17 novels and wrote more than 10 short stories for children. He also wrote cartoon stories for Sri Lanka's first-ever cartoon paper, Sathuta. He had written scripts for over 30 teledramas including Doo Daruwo, Asal Vesiyo, Palingu Menike, Uthuru Kuru Satana, Sitha Niwana Katha and Charitha Thunak. He also wrote scripts for famous films like Ammawarune which was directed by Lester James Peiris and Mihidum Sihina. In 2000, he received the Sumathi Best Teledrama Script Award for the teledrama Uthuru Kuru Satana.
