Somalatha Subasinghe was an actress, theatre director cum playwright in the Sri Lankan entertainment industry. She was born on 2nd July 1936 in Gampaha in Sri Lanka. Her parents were in the education field. Somalatha’s father was a principal, and her mom worked as a teacher. She completed her education at Musaeus College and Buddhist Ladies College in Colombo. In 1962, she joined the education department as a teacher. She worked in the Nalanda College as a drama teacher. She was married to Lionel Fernando, who was Sri Lanka’s ambassador to Malaysia, France and Netherlands. Somalatha started her film career as an actress in 1973 with the film Dahakin Ekek. In 2003, she played in the film Sudu Kaluwara. She was the playwright and director for the stage plays, including Vikurthi, Para Haraha, Sanda Kinduru, Mudu Putthu, Pawara Nuwarak, Wanyosi of Wole Soyinka, The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, Yadam, Antigone, and Mavakage Sangramaya. Somalatha also made plays for children, including Punchi Apata dan Therei, Thoppi Welenda, Gamarala Divya Loketa, Rathmalee, Ottooi, Hima Kumariya, and Walas Pawula.
Somalatha died on 30th May 2015 in Colombo due to age-related illness.
