Tony Ranasinghe was an actor born as Ranasinghe Hettiarachchilage Ignatius Anthony Silva on 31st July 1937 in Modara, Sri Lanka. His parents are Emmanuel Cyril and Lilian Fernando. He has seven siblings, including Ralex, Stella, Marie, Gina, Romwell, Christopher, and Daya. He did his education St. Anthony's College, Wattala and De La Salle College, Colombo.

He started his career as a stenographer before making his acting debut. He married Sirima Indrani Wickramasuriya on 30th April 1962. In 1963, he debuted with Ran Thodu, a stage play directed by Dharmasiri Wickramaratne. His performance in this drama gained him the Governor General's Award for Best Stage Actor. He made his film debut with Punchi Amma, directed by Sirisena Wimalaweera. But, due to some issues, the film wasn’t released. Hence, Gamperaliya, directed by Lester James Peries in 1964, became his first on-screen presence on the silver screen. His next film was a villain role in Ran Salu. In 1966, he appeared as the lead actor in Delovak Athara under the direction of Lester James Peries. For his performance in a supporting role in 1966, he was honoured with the Best Supporting Actor award at Sarasaviya Awards. He also received the Best Actor Awards for Hanthane Kathawa, Duhulu Malak, and Ahasin Polawata.

Some of his famous dramas are Awarjana, Raigam Yaluwo, Ekata Getuma, Suwanda Kekulu, Hathe Wasama, Manokaya, Soorya Vinsathi and Kadamuna. His screenplays won him the Best Screenplay Writer award for Koti Waligaya, Keli Mandala, Awaragira, and Pavuru Walalu. In 1988, he was honoured with the third highest civilian honour of Sri Lanka, Deshabandhu.

On 16th June 2015, Tony Ranasinghe died in Colombo at a public hospital. He was 77.
