Rex Kodippili, born Rex Joseph Kodippili, is a Sri Lankan stuntman, actor and film producer. He was born on October 6th, 1938, in Badulla, Sri Lanka. His father, Don Henry Kodippili, was a surveyor, and his mother’s name was Ethan Kodippili. He has two older brothers. His father passed away when he was 18 months old due to the flooding in Trincomalee district. He and his brothers were then raised by his mother. He had a wife named Katherine, who passed away in 2016. He has two daughters named Rashanthi and Sureka, along with a son named Prasanna. Rex and his brothers completed their schooling from St. Bede’s College, Badulla.
Although his brothers left school early, Rex went to Sri Siddhartha Central College, Badulla, for further studies. After studies, he joined the police department and served there for five years before departing in 1961. He was also a physical training instructor for military police, and had played boxing and swimming. He also worked as a manager at some places including Marina Café and Salaka. Rex was always considered a gifted singer, popularly known as ‘Badulla Monideen Beg.’ He even won second place in the grand finale of the ‘Adunika Peya’ program of the late 1950s radio commercial service, where he received the award from the hands of Late Prime Minister S.W.R.D Bandaranaike. He was a member of the drama circle in his college, through which he performed various live-stage dramas.
He has even been in programs like Nevum Mihira and has sung as many as five solo tracks. While working as a manager at Hotel Salaka, he got acquainted with Oswald Jayasinghe. While dropping him off at a film location in 1969, he met director K.A.W Perera who offered him the role of a pick-pocketer in the film Kathuru Muwath. That was his first step in the film industry. He has faced countless injuries due to his action stunts as well. He also tried his hand at romantic as well as dramatic roles. Some of his best works include Chandani (1975), Pissu Puso (2001), Ranja (2014), and Dr. Nawariyan (2017). He was graced with awards such as the merit award in the Sarasavaiya Awards for his role in the film Koti Waligaya in 1987. In 2019, he was graced with Janabhimani Honorary Award at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall. He was last seen in the movie Ethalaya in 2020.
