Cletus Mendis, born Gammada Liyanage Cletus Paulinus Mendis, is an actor from Sri Lanka. Cletus was born on 17th July 1949 in Negombo, Sri Lanka. Cletus Mendis had an elder brother, Vinicius Mendis. Cletus received numerous awards at the Sarasaviya, OCIC, and Presidential film festivals. Before Mendis started his journey as an actor, he used to teach martial arts to youth at Katupotha. Mendis marked his first work as a stunt director in the 1977 film Wanagatha Kella. Mendis got into the film industry as a stunt director. He debuted in 1978 as a supporting actor in the epic film Veera Puran Appu. Mendis is known for his remarkable role as a villain in many significant films he worked on throughout his career. His journey as a villain started in 1982 with Paramitha.
The film Paramitha was a turning point for Mendis. He is one of the best actors for the villain role. Though Mendis is best known for his villain roles, he also showed his passion for being a singer. In the 1990 film Veera Udara, he showed his musical talent as a playback singer for the film. Mendis also produced the music for Veera Udara. While Mendis had massive success in the film industry, he showed his talent equally in music as he once again worked as a playback singer for Hitha Hondanam Waradin Na, released in 1996. Although Mendis typically works for a villain role in films, he acted. Dharmasena Pathiraja, a director, gave him a different role in his television drama Kadulla.
