Karmi is a Punjabi TV show which aired on DD Punjabi. The show is narrated by a host and an act is presented with the characters. The narrative begins by depicting Punjab as a land once known for its rich culture, fertile soil, and spiritual traditions. However, this idyllic image is quickly contrasted with the current reality. The narrator depicts the current and unknown picture of the place. The place is now plagued by a raging river of drug addiction that is destroying its youth and tearing families apart. The narrative is centered around Punjab and the devastating effect of drugs on the land and its people. The narrator introduces herself as someone deeply connected to Punjab's cultural heritage. She describes several characters whose lives are affected by drugs.

She first introduces a girl named Karmi. She is a young woman who is one of the main characters. She is deeply troubled by mysterious voices she hears, hallucinations related to drug use, or mental health issues. This is one of the effects of drug use as it creates hallucinations and irritating sounds in our minds. As a result, we get irritated and lose control. Chachi (Aunt) is an older woman who tries to comfort and guide Karmi. She suggests taking Karmi to the Gurudwara (Sikh temple) for prayers, believing it might bring her peace. Gurmit is a man who appears to be struggling with severe addiction. His condition has crossed the limit as he required hospitalization. But after returning home, he fell back into drug use. Gurmit's wife is mentioned as faithfully serving her husband despite his addiction. This is the life of the supporters or caretakers of the drug addicts, as they also have to suffer along with their partner. Ravi, Gurmit's son, faces difficulties finding employment, adding to the family's struggles.

There are scenes of men drinking alcohol openly, showing how the usage of drugs is so normalized. Characters discuss how addiction is causing domestic violence. Drugs result in many kind of violations like abuse against women, fighting, etc. Drugs are a cause of rape also. The narrator says that the effects of drugs have reached every corner of the village. The show also depicts broader societal issues contributing to and resulting from the drug crisis. Some of the young people are selling their ancestral property and land to fund their addictions. Unemployment is highlighted as a significant problem. Most of the youth who are unemployed are finding solace in drugs and crimes. The breakdown of family structures and traditional values is evident in the show. Throughout the story, there are illustrations of the community's efforts to cope with this crisis, like the aunt suggesting to take Karmi to Gurudwara.

This shows how many are turning to faith for solace and solutions. There are references to Kirtan (devotional music) and prayers, indicating that some in the community are trying to revive spiritual practices to defeat the darkness enveloping their village. The story also depicts a young person desperately searching for employment, and due to a lack of opportunities, he is driving many toward addiction. Drugs are now a business for many as the users will buy them with any means. Cunning people like this make money even by destroying the lives of others with such poisons. It highlights how drug addiction is not just an individual problem but a societal one that affects families, erodes cultural values, and threatens the future of an entire region. The narrator's tone depicts her deep concern and sorrow for her homeland. This show becomes an eye-opening for many of the viewers. The episodes of the show are available on YouTube.
