1. Lakshmi Shankar
Lakshmi Shankar was a Hindustani classical singer and also dancer. She was a Brahmin born in Jamshedpur (currently in Jharkhand) in Bihar in British India in 1926. Her father was Bhimrao Shastri, who was an aide of Mahatma Gandhi and was actively involved in the movement to free India from the British. She was the associate editor for the weekly journal – Harijan started by Gandhi. Although she had training in Carnatic music, Lakshmi began her career in dancing. In 1939, she joined the dance troupe of Uday Shankar – a famous choreographer, to learn dance. This is when she met her husband Rajendra Shankar (Uday Shankar’s younger brother) and got married to him in 1941. Shankar fell ill once and was forced to stop dancing.

2. Shreya Ghoshal
Shreya Ghoshal, one of the most famous singers in Bollywood today, was born on March 12th, 1984, in Berhampore, West Bengal. Her father Biswajit Ghoshal is an electrical engineer and mother Sharmistha Ghoshal is a postgraduate in literature. She started singing since the age of 4 when her mother taught her. She started her formal training in Hindustani classical Gharana of music when she was only six years old. She was trained for 18 months after which she continued her training in Mumbai with Late Mukta Bhideji. She completed her graduation in Arts with majors in English. Her first on-stage performance was at their club’s annual function. Her first studio album was in Bengali in 19998 and was named Bendhechhi Beena, and her first onscreen performance was in Awaz Nayi Andaaz Wohi. In 1995, she became the winner of All India Light Vocal Music Competition. Her fame and career began with her winning a television singing reality show named Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

5. Manna Dey
Manna Dey is one of the greatest Indian classical singers who had training from his paternal uncle Sangeetacharya Krishna Chandra Dey ( K.C. Dey). He was instrumental in making Manna Dey’s career in Mumbai. K. C. Dey was a popular actor-singer-composer of New Theatres in Kolkata. When New Theaters closed down, K C Dey moved to Mumbai and Manna Dey accompanied him. Manna Dey had left for Mumbai with his uncle to make a career in singing but understood his pronunciation in Hindi was a major barrier to fetch him the singing career, hence he became assistant to music director for S D Burman and even H P Das. But he continued taking training from classical stalwarts, Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Ustad Abdul Rahman Khan. Manna Dey got his first break to sing a song with Suraiya at the tender age of 11, which was composed by his uncle. But his solo song 'Upar Gagan Vishal’ from Mashaal (1950) become super hit and he stayed back in Mumbai. Later he sang innumerable songs that proved his versatility as a singer. He had a career of five decades and he went to sing songs in various languages but his songs in Bengali became more popular as his voice suited matinee idol, Uttam Kumar, very much.
