Jaswant Rai Sharma, popularly known by his pseudonym Naqsh Lyallpuri, was born on February 24, 1928, in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad and present-day Pakistan) into a Punjabi Brahmin family. His father was a mechanical engineer. He disapproved of Jaswant's affinity for literature.
