The story takes place in the year 2007 at Bihar camp, when the country was still in a dilemma to provide citizenship to Biharis or not. The Refugee is about a Bihari drug dealer, Iqbal, in the Geneva camp. Iqbal’s life keeps getting crappier with no end of crappy opportunities. Iqbal’s fate seems almost apparent as he must pull out all the stops to save his brother. Iqbal’s circumstances force him to become an informer of a law enforcement officer, Maria. Iqbal’s risky job and his friend Wasim drive him to a dangerous life.

The plot goes like this, Iqbal shakes hands with Maria (a law enforcement officer) to save his brother, from hellish jail, who was wrongly sentenced. Iqbal must find an international terrorist, Carbon, who is hiding in the camp. The Refugee is also about the community whose social status was stripped off after the liberation war in 1971. The community was identified as stranded Pakistanis. They are also recognized as people who did not support the freedom war, and hence, they were treated as renegades. All six 25-30-minute-long episodes put light on the miserable condition of these people. The Refugee could have been a compelling thriller built in a socio-political background, but instead, it gets downplayed to a humdrum series with a predictable plot. It lacks the heart, but it is a one-time watch. Better dialogue delivery would have added some interest.
