Plot:

Sameer, an NRI based in UAE, desperately seeks a groom for his sister Haala. Despite the strained relationship, Haala agrees to his choice, Ameen Kasim. However, Haala’s reluctance to open leads to a heated confrontation. Can Sameer save the day?

Star Performances:

In such a light-hearted movie, what matters is not just the screenplay but also the music. In that domain, Vishnu Vijay has done his job rather well. Following his success with Thallumaala, Vishnu Vijay has created some nice tracks for ‘Sulaikha Manzil’.

Anarkali Marikar has performed her character of Haala Parveen well. The angst of a broken lover, followed by the reluctance to move on, was portrayed effectively. Another brilliant performance from Anarkali after her superb rendition of Ziya in the B 32 Muthal 44 Vare, released only a couple of weeks ago.

Anarkali’s chemistry with Lukman, who portrays the role of Kasim, is also quite impressive. As a man who wants the best for his would-be wife, Lukman has done full justice to his role. So has Chemban Vinod Jose, who plays the role of Haala’s estranged brother Samir.

Analysis:

Big Fat Indian Weddings: Now that is one subject that is discussed quite a lot but rarely portrayed with finesse on screen. However, Ashraf Hamza’s directorial is different. It not only picks up a region that is less talked about but also makes sure that the message is delivered without any fuss.

The story revolves around a Malabar Muslim wedding, something not much talked about in Malayalam cinema. However, the story is not limited to the festivities and goes far beyond that. The equation between the central couple and how the families take an interest in the same is something that this movie excels at.

A screentime of less than 2 hours is enough to depict the nuances of a Malabar Muslim wedding and how the society is involved. The best part about this movie is that it is both realistic and at the same time, engaging, not straying towards the path of becoming a docudrama.

Another plus point about this movie is that despite the societal construct, none of the characters are one-sided. Neither the male characters are dominating, nor are the female characters just for pomp and show.

The only issue with this movie is the tendency to be over-simplistic in some sequences. Moreover, given the screen space of the character of Sulaikha, the movie title seems to be more of a misnomer. But if you are ready to ignore that, ‘Sulaikha Manzil’ is an experience you should not miss.

What’s There?

  • A light-hearted entertainer in the right spirit
  • Earnest efforts from the lead pair of Anarkali Marikar and Lukman Avaran
  • A social message delivered subtly
  • Mamukkoya’s final performance

What’s Not There?

  • Minor flaws

Verdict:

‘Sulaikha Manzil’ is a light-hearted take on marriage and the core issue regarding the same. It asks some pertinent questions in the most light-hearted way. It is not flawless, yet ‘Sulaikha Manzil’ leaves you with a sweet smile at the end.
