It is a movie that marked the arrival of Iranian cinema on the world stage. The movie is a winner of Academy Award for best foreign language movie, Golden Bear at Berlin, Asian film award in multiple categories, New York Film Circle Award, Asia Pacific Film Award, and many more. These accolades heaped on the movie in the year 2011 and 2012.

Also, it is one of the very few movies to get a 99% on rotten tomatoes site as well. So coming to the story, it’s a drama genre movie based on the background of a couple’s clash to find a forward thinking country to educate further and better the life prospects for their daughter. The movie opens with the courtroom scene of a couple appearing for divorce, to end their 14 years of marriage. Reason being, wife, wants to leave the country for better future and husband can’t leave his ailing father alone. The couple is Simin ( Leila Hatami Leila Hatami is a well-known actress hailing from >> Read More... ) and Nader ( Peyman Moaadi Peyman was born to a couple, who were from Persian >> Read More... ) with their 11 years old daughter, Termeh ( Sarina Farhadi Sarina Farhadi was born in 1998 in Iran. This leaves Nader with the option of hiring a domestic help, Razieh (Sareh Bayat) for all the household chores and especially taking care of his Alzheimer’s struck father (Ali-Asghar Shahbazi). Razieh already has a little daughter, who comes with her to her workplace, as well as a secret she’s hiding from Nader. Even Razieh’s husband is a sensitive person, Hodjat ( Shahab Hosseini Shahab Hosseini is an actor from Iran. He was bor >> Read More... ), who complicates the matter further on discovering his wife’s difficult job of taking care of an elderly man, who’s not so well.

The complex plot of modernity and old beliefs lead to bigger troubles when a verbal fight of words and later pushing Razieh by Nader happens during an argument. Brilliant acting by the Iranian crew and superb handling of the subject by director Asghar Farhadi Asghar Farhadi was born on 7th May 1972 in the cit >> Read More... shows the brilliance of cinema at work. The trouble with knowing one’s rights and not having the freedom to exercise them is so well portrayed by the characters. Also, the treatment of the subject is homely (Iranian) and world class (as a forward thinking, working couple is shown) at the same time.

It is a masterpiece that is worth watching.
