Wish Upon Movie Review

Wish Upon is a 2017 American supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti, produced by Busted Shark Productions and distributed by Broad Green Pictures. The movie has a cast composed of Joey King, KI Hong Lee and Sydney Park among others.

Plot

A compulsive hoarder, Clare Shannon's dad Jonathan finds an old music box while dumpster diving which he gives to his daughter. Clare soon discovers that this box grants wishes. However, when she starts using these wishes, terrifying things start happening to the people around her, leading her to deduce that her newfound discovery of the magical wishes comes at a deadly price.

Analysis

Wish Upon is an ideal soft-horror film. It's not scary at all, especially for fans of true horror and is even comedic in some places. The movie uses several clichés, and contains a lot of gore and brutal sequences that are the only elements of real horror present throughout the film. It has a predictable, supernatural-powered storyline that delivers a movie that is far more likely to be classified a thriller rather than actual horror. A light and gory flick, Wish Upon has a decent plotline and is a pretty enjoyable watch if you're not going into the movie expecting some intense, scary horror.

Verdict

Wish Upon plays out more like a supernatural movie with gory elements than it does true horror. The plotline is predictable, but it's not dull watching the events of the movie pan out. It has a few surprising twists, and some of the sequences are pretty graphic, and there's a lot of personal drama and backstories involved. The plot could have been improved upon, but it's a decent watch for when you want something to keep you entertained and surprised at times but nothing too scary or intense.
