Winter On Fire is a documentary film on Ukraine. It covers a broad picture of Euromaidan protests from 21 November 2013 to 23 February 2014. The documentary is available in many languages like English, Ukrainian and Russian. Evgeny Afineevsky directed the film. Den Tolmor wrote the script of the documentary. Cissy Jones narrated the film. SPN Production, Passion Pictures, and many others are the production partner of this movie. The cast includes Bishop Agapit, Archbishop Petro Malchuk, Dmytro Holubnychy, Valerii Zalevskiy, Katerina Overchenko, Olena Stadnik, Ruslana Lyzhicko, Maksim Panov, Timur Ibragimov and Pavlo Dobryanskyy. Evgeny Afineevsky and Den Tolmor are the producers of the movie. Jasha Klebe dealt with the soundtrack. Will Znidaric edited the script.
Plot
The Ukrainian documentary covers the Maidan Uprising that took place in 2013-2014, in Kyiv. It begins in a chronological order of uprising, supporting it with the testimonies of around 24 people. The narrator narrates the events beginning with the EU-Ukraine trade agreement. This trade agreement promised a secure future for Ukraine. However, this agreement was discarded by Russia as it was in Russia’s way to develop. The European citizens started protesting in Kyiv. After around four months, the government tried controlling the masses by using force. The police started deadly firing on the citizens. The peaceful protest soon turned into a violent massacre. In February 2014, the protest leaders took an oath to take the government down no matter what. Viktor Yanukovych, the president of Ukraine flew to Russia. Afterwards, the government got dissolved. The election for the new government opened.

Winter On Fire is a documentary. All the actors are real life survivors of Euromaidan protests. Cissy Jones mainly narrated the documentary. People like Said Ismagilov, who is a Mufti of the Muslim Administration of Ukraine, an Archbishop Petro Malchuk, who is a Archbishop of the Catholic Church. Dmytro Holubnychy, who is a protester. Valerii Zalevskiy, a heart surgeon. Mustafa Nayem, a journalist. Olena Stadnik, who is an art critic. Ruslana Lyzhicko who is a Ukrainian singer, Maksim Panov an attorney and Kurganskyi Eduard who is a businessman have narrated their experience and opinion on these protests. Their presence made the documentary more intense. All of them has delivered a nuanced performance keeping the audience focused.
Analysis
Winter On Fire is a brilliant Ukrainian documentary. The film is realistic and authentic. The camera doesn’t shy or hide the painful suffering of the citizens. It neatly showed the consequences of the mass killing. The filmmakers openly criticized the president of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych who crushed the dreams of thousands of people who wanted Ukraine to be the part of Europe. The script is very exciting. The narration of the movie is also top-notch. In the documentary, the makers have used the testimony of 2 dozen people, which makes the film authentic. It takes audience’s emotions on the rollercoaster, making them experience highs and lows of Ukraine. However, the pace of the documentary is problematic. It is instead a fast movie.
The screenplay is the best part of the movie. The documentary has fantastic cinematography. It made the script easy to visualize. The soundtracks are impressive. It makes the audience feel the emotions of protesters with more depth.
