PLOTĀ
Pregnant Jessie loses her boyfriend and unborn child in an accident. It puts her in a wheelchair with broken legs with months of therapy ahead of her. She is not able to work for herself because of her injuries & lack of money. She goes to stay with her father, Leon, who was at variance with her. The tension between Jessie & Leon after arriving home is uncomfortable. Leon uncovers a room, which was his late wife Kate, Jessieās mother, who died of cancer after Jessieās birth. The house looks dead with liquor bottles, cigarette butts, and old food. Jessie finds VHS tapes made by her mother, but her father doesnāt allow her to see them. Kate did a lot of tarot card readings for her unborn daughter, all recorded on tape. Jessie starts observing unusual things at home. She sees a dead girl in a bog sneaking through a curtain, mirrors breaking, blinking lights, etc. Meanwhile, Jessieās school friend Preston helps her to find her roots of fear. They face violent encounter with local Creole population. Tape hidden inside wall makes Jessie find her unanswered questions with shock.Ā
STAR PERFORMANCES
Mark Webber gave the strongest performance. Sarah Snook has done wonderful acting as Jessie. The chemistry between Jessie & Preston is amazing. David Andrew as Leon is convincible as a short-tempered, cruel father. Chris Ellis has a small role of Sheriff Pruitt and is like a breathing space as a comic character in the movie.
ANALYSIS
At the beginning of the movie the happiness suddenly replaces tragedy. Jessie & Prestonās engaging conversation makes the audience think about fate & love among them. There are a lot of dark family secrets. The movie involves drawers of forgotten objects, voodoo ceremonies in the woods, & tapes containing ominous messages from beyond the grave. Being a horror movie, these are shown in a detailed manner. The trauma in the family is shown well. However, there is the stereotyped dancing of Creole population, chanting in the firelight, which is a predictable & traditional element in horror films. Overall, not that good scary movie.Ā
WHATāS THERE?
WHATāS NOT THERE?
The direction of Kevin Greutert does not fit into this script because it includes social structure, depression, race, religion, culture, etc. The movie fails to convey everything in it.Ā
VERDICT
āJessabelleā is not anĀ engaging movie at all. If you extremely love suspense & horror films, this is the last option.
