Granada Nights (2021) Directed and written by Abid Khan Bio coming soon... >> Read More... . The film is produced by Abid Khan, Munir Khairdin, and Pippa Bhatt. Also starring Antonio Aakeel Antonio Aakeel is a British actor, director, write >> Read More... as Ben, a heartbroken youth who finds himself in the lively Granada, Spain, on a quest for self-awareness. The offbeat film about love, friendship and personal growth stars Oscar Casas, Alice Sanders, and Devora Wilde, among others. Granada Nights is also a richly visual movie, with beautiful cinematography that showcases the life and culture of Granada and has as a bonus the beauty of outdoor life and nightlife.

Plot

Ben is a young British-Pakistani and recently flew to Granada, Spain, broken-hearted after his girlfriend decided to ‘break it off’ very last minute. Unable to move on, he throws himself into the city’s vibrant streets, enrolling in a Spanish course and befriending a party-loving group of international students. Together, they tour Granada’s nightlife, window shop at historic landmarks and wandering hidden corners, each experience a rope that tugs Ben away from his past and into a world of self-discovery. So, despite the new friendships and the thrill of a foreign city, Ben is still dealing with ongoing thoughts of his ex. While attempting to reinvent himself, one of his new friends, Amelia, an adventurous traveller with an easy-going style, captivates him. She urges him to find peace in uncertainty, to live in the moment. And just as Ben thinks he is finally moving on, an unexpected message from his ex-rattles his progress. Will he return to his old feelings about things, or accept finally that he is who he is now, he is not who he was, and he is now in Granada.

Star Performance

Granada Nights lives and dies on the heartfelt performance of Antonio Aakeel as Ben, conveying his emotional arc with honesty and depth. Director Abid Khan melds cinematic youth exuberance and lost love grief with visual pizzazz and transporting style. Oscar Casas and Alice Sanders round out the supporting cast with their ordinary feel while friendships come across as authentic. The beautiful cinematography makes the most of Granada’s dynamic nightlife and historical charm, lending a dreamy, nostalgic quality to the film. The handheld shots and natural lighting lend a sense of realism, and the soundtrack enhances the film’s emotional arc. Granada Nights is a richly visual and reflective journey.

Analysis

Granada Nights is a visually stunning and profoundly touching coming-of-age drama covering heartbreak, identity, and discovery. Director Abid Khan weaves a story that pleasantly immerses viewers in the spirit of youth and wanderlust while threading a balance of self-discovery and cultural exploration throughout the narrative. Antonio Aakeel gives a layered performance, authentic with Ben’s inner turmoil. What strikes you about the film is the cinematography, which creates a hand-held, natural light and documentary-like intimacy that enhances the realism of Ben’s journey. Even Granada is a critical character, to its bustling thoroughfares and historic sites acting as both backdrop and metaphor for change. Nonetheless, while the film masters the atmosphere and delves deeply into its characters, the pacing seems to come to a halt and parts of it are lit by the cycle of repetition. The screenplay, while heartfelt, relies heavily on familiar tropes of self-discovery narratives. Still, Granada Nights presents a contemplative multilayered experience — somewhere between cinema and the essay.

What’s There?

  • The film arrests Granada’s lively streets and significant exquisiteness with spectacular visuals.
  • The use of handheld scenes and genuine lighting improves authenticity.

What’s Not There?

  • The film stays in particular segments, creating some scenes feel boring.
  • The film’s self-analysing nature may not involve those looking for a more plot-driven experience.

Verdict

A visually dazzling and incisive exploration of self, Granada Nights is elevated by the heartfelt performance of Antonio Aakeel and the immersive direction of Abid Khan. Though beautifully photographed, lapping up Granada’s charm as well as the fleeting sense of youth, “A Last Thing” unfolds with the languorous pace of a walk, with the ease of an infrequent wanderer, and its gently familiar story might not be for everyone. It is nonetheless an earnest cinematic experience.
