Kabootri Devi was born on 9th June 1945 in Kali-Kumaon, Uttarakhand. She was a prominent Pahadi singer still considered one of the greatest Pahadi singers of all time. Her family members were singers and artists and Kabootri adopted her love for music from them. She received her music classes from her father and later got married. Her husband played a pivotal role in shaping her career in music. He recognized her talent and encouraged her to proceed in Music. She started singing at fairs and other small shows. At that time, it was rare for female singers to become famous, and Kabootri faced the struggle too. But due to her melodious voice and the inclusion of ragas in her music, she started gaining popularity. Her songs became popular due to their broadcast on different FM shows in Najjabad and Kumaon. Still, she had a long way to go and had to spend a significant part of her life in poverty.
Her career took a massive turn in 2002 when her songs on Uttarakhand’s beauty and the problems faced by Pahadi people started gaining more attention. She became a well-renowned singer by then. Due to her immense popularity, she was called “Tejan Bai” of Uttarakhand. She was honored with the “Cholliyan Mahotsav Samman” by the Navodaya Parvatiya Kala Kendra in 2002. She also received honors from the Culture Department of Uttarakhand and finally received the “Lifetime Achievement Award in folk singing” from the government of Uttarakhand. Kabootri Devi, unfortunately, passed away on 5th July 2018 due to heart problems. Even after her demise, Kabootri Devi will always continue to be one of the most prominent Pahadi singers who helped in promoting Pahadi music to a global level.
