Gopal Babu Goswami, one of Uttarakhand’s most famous folk singers, was born to a poor household on 2nd February 1941 in Chandkhet village of Uttarakhand. Since childhood, he had a considerable inclination toward music, but his family never supported his decision. At the age of around 14, his father passed away, due to which he had to bear all the family responsibilities. He dropped out of school and started working in fairs, factories, and as a truck driver. He had a rough childhood and couldn't focus much on his career. During his childhood, he used to sing songs at fairs and on radio shows too. During a fair in Almora, a famous folk singer Brajendra Lal Shah recognized this young talent and helped him further to brush up his singing skills. He was hired by Lal Shah only and used to sing songs under his guidance. Gopal Babu started recording songs, and his first song, “Kele Baji Murali O Bena,” became a hit song.

His popularity grew in almost all parts of the state and in some parts of Uttar Pradesh too. Due to his growing popularity, his colleagues and fans urged him to release his first Csette and he did so in 1976. He started working with the famous cassette company Polydor and released several songs and cassettes then. His songs “ Yo Peta Khatir”, “ Aankhi Tera Kai-Kai”, “Ja Seli Ja Swaras,” “ Bhur Bhur Ujjav Hago”, and many more were loved by the people of Uttarakhand. Gopal Babu also worked with several other prominent folk singers at that time and released several cassettes and songs with them.

Apart from singing and writing songs, Gopal Babu has also written books in the Pahadi language and Hindi, some of which include Geet mala, Darpan, and Rashtrajyoti. This legendary singer left the mortal world on 26th November 1996 due to suffering from a brain tumor. Even after several years of his demise, Gopal Babu Goswami is considered one of the pioneers of Pahadi folk Music and will always be a legend in the hearts of many.
