Afzal grew up in Hounslow, London, and attended Hounslow Heath School. He received musical training from an alumnus of the Royal College of Music in London. After earning a degree in engineering from K.J. Somaiya College, he worked at KPMG before deciding to pursue a career in music. His music compositions have been featured in popular American TV series such as Loki, Ms. Marvel, NCIS: Los Angeles, and The Twilight Zone. He began his music career in 2013 by composing film scores and soundtracks for movies such as Pune 52, Prague, and Baji. He has also worked on international films such as Gift, The Alternative, Then a Hero Comes Along, and Bachelor Girls.
His film albums have been released on major record labels like Zee Music Company, Universal Music Group, Times Music, and Saregama. Atif Afzal moved to New York in 2018 to study music at New York University. In 2020, he composed soundtracks for NCIS: Los Angeles and The Twilight Zone. In 2021, he composed music for Loki and the Alicia Keys-produced Netflix film, Resort to Love. In 2022, he composed two soundtracks for Ms. Marvel. Afzal has also lent his voice to songs such as Shravan Shravan in the film Baji and Chor Chor Saare in the film Charandas Chor.
