Kachian Kandan is a Punjabi TV series that aired on DD Punjabi. The show is produced by Dr John Rajkumar. It aired in 2015. The show depicts a tense family drama centred on a young woman's desire to pursue higher education. She wants to be a doctor but faces heavy resistance from her family, as she is from a traditional family. Traditional family believes that women are to be in their house doing the chores inside the house and live their entire lives as a caretaker of their families. The story begins with an argument between the young, Meera) and her parents. Meera is eager to enroll in medical college, having performed well in her entrance exams. She repeatedly asks her mother to discuss the college fees with her father. But her parents are resistant. They keep up the conventional beliefs. Her father says that girls do not pursue higher education and should stay with their family.
He suggests that instead of becoming a doctor, Meera should learn practical skills like cooking and sewing, which he believes will be more useful when she gets married and goes to her in-laws' house. They believe, that a girl’s ultimate goal is to get married and be a good wife. Meera passionately argues for her right to education, insisting that she wants to study and become a doctor. She tries to convince her parents that she has the aptitude for it. She mentions that she had secured a good rank in the entrance exams and her getting admission to a medical college. Mother appears to be an understanding character, and is stuck between both. She couldn’t resist her husband’s opinion, and couldn’t make her daughter sad. She attempts to mediate between Meera and her father, trying to explain each side's perspective to the other. The conversation reveals the generational and ideological gap within the families. While Meera represents the progressive, ambitious young generation eager to break free from traditional constraints, her father resembles the conservative older generation. They adhere to long-standing social norms and gender roles. He sees education for girls as unnecessary, even potentially harmful, as it might make them unfit for their expected roles as wives and daughters-in-law. He wants her daughter to be a good wife and a daughter-in-law. He repeatedly emphasizes that girls in their family don't study beyond a certain point and that Meera should focus on learning household skills instead. This represents the typical Indian society. Meera, however, is determined to chase her dreams. She argues that times have changed and that she should be allowed to study further.
She tries to appeal to her father's emotions, expressing how becoming a doctor has been her lifelong ambition. Her father is also worried about the fees. But she constantly searches for ways to manage the fees, indicating her willingness to work hard and possibly secure scholarships. Throughout the episode, we can see Meera’s frustration and desperation. It shows the weight of women to compromise with tradition and familial expectations. The mother's role is particularly interesting. She appears to be someone understanding. Meera becomes increasingly emotional, at times pleading with her parents and at other times expressing her frustration and disappointment. The father becomes more stubborn saying that Meera's desire for education means she doesn't love or respect her family. Overall the series deals with gender roles, traditional values, generation gaps, etc. The episodes of the show are available on YouTube.
