Shalmali is an Indian serial that premiered in 2008 on DD National. It is a Hindi-language serial that narrates the tale of a problematic married couple. Shalmali is an independent, workaholic woman married to Naresh, a careless and unemployed man. She got a government job. Shalmali loved Naresh from her school days and wanted to marry him. After a few years of being married to Naresh, she realised this being a nightmare rather than a daydream. After five years of marriage, she conceived but didn't tell Naresh about her pregnancy. Shalmali saw Naresh’s changing behavior and decided to abort the child. It was Shamali’s mother who asked her to conceive a child as it had been eight years of them being married. Little did her mother know that her daughter had conceived but aborted the child without Naresh’s knowledge. Shalmali's mother suggested having a baby as her daughter's married life would be sorted.
Shalmali found herself as she wrote about her abortion in her journal. She shared this incident with Saroj, her friend. Even Saroj suggested that she had been wrong to Naresh for aborting the child without his knowledge. Shalmali found her solace in the diary, which she used to pour her heart in and write everything without any filtration. She wanted to tell the truth to Naresh; however, she found herself in an unexpected situation. Naresh came home late at night, and left for Nikita’s house when she called him. Nikita and Naresh talked for a bit and Naresh mouthed about his wife. Shalmali got to know about their conversation and confronted Naresh.
