The story begins with Purvi eloping from her engagement, in Gorakhpur to marry her love interest, Babu Tripathi in Varanasi. However, when Purvi meets Babu Tripathi, he scolds her, which infuriates Purvi, and she jumps into the Ganga River to end her life but is saved by Pandit Jagannath Mishra.

Purvi is brought to Mishra's house, where Jagannath and Kusum try to understand Purvi's situation, which leads her to take this extreme step. Later, Jagannath informs Purvi's parents about her situation; Purvi's parents, on learning the situation, scold and beat Purvi. Jagannath, on seeing Purvi being beaten by her parents, scolds them back for their actions. Purvi's parents declare that Purvi is dead for them and leave Mishra's house.

Jagannath and Kusum, who live alone after their children moved abroad, invite Purvi to live with them. Purvi starts living in the Mishra house and meets Babu Tripathi regularly. Later in the story, Purvi and Babu Tripathi decide to have a court marriage; however, Babu doesn't attend court. Soon, he confesses that he doesn't love her and after hearing this, Purvi is heartbroken. Jagannath consoles Purvi and advises her to move on and start anew. After a few months, Purvi finds out she is pregnant with Babu's child; meanwhile, Jagannath's children, Alok and Deepa, learn about Purvi living with their parents and decide to remove her from their house.
