Trivandrum Lodge is a Malayalam film released in 2012. This is a film that brings the themes of sex, love, heartbreak and human desire to Malayalam cinema. It was directed by V. K. Prakash and produced by P. A. Sebastian. The brazen script of this film is the work of Anoop Menon Anoop Menon is an Indian film actor, script writer >> Read More... . "Brazen" is certainly the right word, as the themes of this film bring people to the uncomfortable edge of their seats, most possibly in a good way.

Trivandrum Lodge stars Jayasurya, Anoop Menon (yes, the screenwriter), Honey Rose In her career spanning 8 years, Honey Rose is cons >> Read More... and others. P. Balachandran and P. Jayachandran play the supporting roles. This was a good casting of people, considering the nature of the film.

Plot

Trivandrum Lodge is a story that circles a group of people who are trying to navigate the concepts of love, lust and desire in the setting of the old, rusty Trivandrum Lodge. The plot is vast, following many people with different age groups and backgrounds, but their lives become part of the same story with the arrival of a certain woman, who throws a wrench into the somewhat dull happenings of the lodge.

The story follows many people -- Abdu, a virgin looking desperately for someone to be intimate with. Satheesan is an aspiring actor and the man who takes Satheesan under his wing -- Shibu. Peggy Aunty and Mr Arthur Realton, the oldest inhabitants of the TL. The owner of the lodge is a relatively (relatively being the key word) simple man, Ravishankar, whose wife was a prostitute. His son Arjun is another piece of this puzzling story. And finally, Dhwani, who, in her own words, wishes to "fornicate with abandon." She is recently divorced and is consequently on a hunt to find the best of life.

Through Dhwani's wish to write a novel about Kochi comes this bold but intricate film.

Star Performance

Trivandrum Lodge is a film in which every character is a spectacle within themselves. The actors have understood that part well and bring a unique energy to each of their roles. We have Abdu, played by Jayasurya, who is very, very desperate to feel intimacy. Jayasurya captures that desperation well and delivers his character with a sense of both humor and discomfort. On the other hand, we have Honey Rose, who plays Dhwani. She is uninhibited and open in her portrayal of the character and perfectly shows her carefree, newly rebellious and provocative side. She plays a strong woman, and she owns it.

Others in the film include Anoop Menon, who plays the role of Ravi Shankar Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , and Master Dhananjay Master Dhananjay is a South Indian child artist wh >> Read More... , who plays his son. They bring a wholesome side to this film. P. Balachandran and P. Jayachandran have also done an excellent job. Each character is unique and unconventional, and the characters portray that well.

Analysis

Trivandrum Lodge is an exceptionally out-of-pocket movie in the best of ways. It explores themes that are often left untouched in other films, and even if they are explored, it is done in a subtle, hush-hush way. This film is a refreshing perspective, with characters that will startle you and leave you surprised but amused.

The cinematography of the film is just wonderful. The visuals of Kochi and the Trivandrum Lodge add to the overall appeal of the film. These visuals give the Trivandrum Lodge almost a human touch, making it seem like the real main character of the film. It is shown as old and rusty but with an intriguing vibe that is hard to miss. Pradeep Nair Pradeep Nair is a famous Indian Director, Writer, >> Read More... is to be given the credits for this.

There are times in the film when it feels like it's missing a structured storyline. But the humor and the intrigue of the characters make up for it. The jokes, though highly inappropriate, are genuinely funny. It challenges the monotony and normalcy of conventional society with an unbridled and open perspective, characters, and plots.

Yet, the movie is not just simply inappropriate. There are many wholesome moments, like the relationship between Ravi Shankar and his son, Arjun. Even the story between Arjun and his crush has an old-school kind of charm to it, like the story of his father and his late mother. Characters that are highly provocative, like Abdu and Korah, have a certain sincerity to them. These elements push the movie from crass and inappropriate to well-rounded and entertaining.

What's There?

  • Great themes and entertaining.
  • Unique plot
  • Great characters and acting.

What's Not There?

  • Scattered storyline.

Verdict

Trivandrum Lodge is a breath of fresh air. It offers an interesting plot with even more interesting and amusing characters. There are so many layers to unpack in this seemingly light-hearted movie. It is not something you would want to miss.
