He was born in East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. At the age of two, their family moved to Hyderabad, so he was grown up in Hyderabad.
He learnt Kathak (Indian classical dance) while he was studying 3rd class. Afterwards he learnt Bangra (dance originating from the Punjab region) extensively for eight years. He moved to Hyderabad and started his acting career. He was offered one of the main roles in ‘Nuvve’ by Gopichand (Telugu film director). He got more opportunities in big movies like Bommarillu, Sainikudu and Rakhi. He was presently busy in Tollywood acting in supporting roles.

HG Dattatreya had excelled in many movies, especially in Munnudi (2000) and Bharath Stores (2012) that fetched him a national award. For his effortless and natural performance of a small time grocery retailer in Kannada film Bharath Store, he was given a special jury award. Most of the actors in the tinsel town are not comfortable doing minor roles, but this actor has no qualms about it. He also impressed the Telugu audience with his performance in Thila Danam.
