Plot

Sanya Dhingra is an unemployed woman, who is a genius in chemistry. She aims to earn a job for a respectable life. Suddenly, a mishap in her family compels her to do the unthinkable: volunteer to educate the youth about sex education. Will she succeed in her aim?

Star Performances

After her decent attempt in a rather underwhelming 'Doctor G,' Rakul Preet Singh has done a good job as the titular protagonist. She did her best to portray the role of a woman who is out to make a difference.

Sumeet Vyas and Satish Kaushik have done justice to their roles. Even though her role was limited, Prachee Shah Pandya gave her best.

Analysis

Making a movie on a taboo subject is a challenge from the word go. It is even tougher if you narrate the tale without offending either side. 'Chhatriwali,' based on the importance of teaching the proper usage of contraceptives and sex education, is one such movie.

As a concept, the film is not a bad venture. Some of the sequences, as well as the research by the makers, indicate the same. However, the movie falters at the stage of execution. The film could have been another path-breaking flick like ' Vicky Donor Click to look into! >> Read More... ' or ' Badhaai Ho Click to look into! >> Read More... '. Sadly, that is not the case.

The humor is decent, and the dialogues show an urge for change. However, the makers could not resist the urge to preach, which have claimed movies like 'Janhit mein Jaari' and 'Doctor G' in the past. The script did not have enough nuances or the depth required for a sensitive film like this.

The actors have done their job well. Rakul Preet Singh, despite the limitations of a script, portrays her role with finesse. Sumeet Vyas and Prachee Shah Pandya were also likable, though their roles could have been written better. Satish Kaushik and Dolly Ahluwalia did justice to their roles. Rajesh Tailang's role was mismatched, and his obstinate attitude looked unnecessary.

What's There?

  • Earnest effort from Rakul Preet Singh in the lead
  • Honest performances from the supporting cast, particularly Satish Kaushik and Dolly Ahluwalia

What's Not There?

  • Lack of depth in the script
  • No emotional connection with the subject
  • Resisting the urge to be open about the subject at hand

Verdict

'Chhatriwali' is a golden opportunity missed. The movie could have told some crucial lessons without being obscene, but the makers had other ideas. You can still watch it if you have a knack for seeing something different.
