Plot

Twelve strangers awaken dazed and shackled, their mouths gagged. They discover a cache of weapons, and before they can gather their wits, they are labelled "deplorable" and immediately chased. All of this, we find out, is reminiscent of the Manorgate affair from the previous year, in which "elites" stated their intention to hunt "deplorable" on a property. The strangers attempt to flee, but it does not go well. Ten of them are dead inside the first 20 minutes. This film revolves around a group of wealthy progressives who abduct working-class people with conservative political ideas and hunt them for sport. It is a satire on America's deep political division between left and right. Crystal survives everything. She grabs a bottle of champagne and boards Athena’s private jet.

Star Performance

Betty Gilpin, who plays Crystal, did an excellent job portraying a fearless female badass. She’s good in action scenes. Her facial expressions are on point. Athena, played by Hilary Swank, is also an unfathomable character that the actress has portrayed perfectly. The cast is an excellent choice of versatile actors.

Analysis

The film has the appropriate amount of satire. It shows both sides of America. It has no “good guys”; it’s the hunters and the hunted. This hits too close to home. People don’t always see eye to eye in politics yet the film has done a fantastic job of depicting the irony in politics. Here, the liberals may appear to have an upper hand but the movie has its twists and turns. The film hooks us by implying that anything could happen in this movie, which makes sense as much as it would in real life. Violence is another key feature of this film that is too close to home. Gun violence, which happens to be one of the main problems in America, is a pivotal theme throughout the film. On August 7, 2019, Universal Pictures announced that they would be suspending the film's promotional campaign n the wake of the Dayton and El Paso mass shootings, Several days later, the film was pulled from the studio's release schedule. This shows how close the film is linked to the real-life audience and it is a rather horrendous image we associate America with.

What's There?

  • Politics satire
  • Excellent performances

What's Not There?

  • A few minor flaws

Verdict

The horror thriller is executed neatly and the stars' performances make the audience a non-boring film. Its genre is horror but it is more on the gory side.
