Plot

The film’s protagonist is Jack, played by Matt Dillon, an unsuccessful architect living in Washington. The film follows Jack as he goes unhinged and becomes a serial killer and is guided by Roman poet Virgil through nine circles of hell. The first person Jack killed was a woman he met on the side of the road who needed to get her tire jack fixed. Jack killed her after she irked him. He stored the bodies of his victims in a industrial freezer in a building he bought. Next, he kills a widow, and then kills his girlfriend and her two sons. He kills people indiscriminately and in horrid ways. The film follows his descent into madness as increases the frequency of his killings and his conversations with Virgil, as the police closes in on him.

Star Performance

Matt Dillon is unnerving as an unhinged madman who kills without a thought behind his eyes. The supporting cast gives good performances even though they have short screen times.

Analysis

The film is extreme, and viewers would either like it or would find themselves unable to sit through it. The film contains an extremely high amount of blood, gore, and violence that is difficult to watch.

What’s There?

• The film follows Jack on his journey of unjustified murders, accompanied by Virgil who is leading him through the nine circles of hell

• Spectacular performance by Matt Dillon

• The film is both – alluring and repulsive because the blood and gore makes one want to stop watching while the storyline allures one to continue watching it

What’s Not There?

• The film contains blood, violence, and gore to such an extent that it might be difficult to watch for some viewers

• The film’s long runtime makes it difficult to sit through

Verdict

Horror and thriller enthusiasts can give the film a try, but be warned about its excessive blood and gore, which even extends to murdering children.
