Plot

The film’s protagonist is Russell Core, played by Jeffrey Wright, a retired naturalist and wolf expert who was hired by Medora Slone, played by Riley Keough, to track and eliminate a pack of wolves, which has killed three children, including her own son. Core travels to Northern Alaska for the task. While helping Medora track down the wolf pack, the two bond over their mutual solitude. When Medora’s husband Vernon Slone, played by Alexander Skarsgård returns home from the Iraq War, things take a dark and violent turn. The film follows Core as he tries to find the wolf pack and uncover the mystery surrounding the Slone family.

Star Performance

Riley Keough, Jeffrey Wright, and James Badge Dale deliver good performances in the film. Alexander Skarsgård gives a mediocre performance as he often seems too stiff and blank on-screen.

Analysis

The film is based on a novel of the Same name by William Giraldi, and transports the viewers to the stark Alaskan landscape, with snow peaked mountains. The film portrays inherent human darkness and struggles.

What’s There?

• The film is set in the backdrop of a stunning snow-covered Alaska

• The film has thriller and mystery elements

• The film has a stellar cast with Jeffrey Wright, Alexander Skarsgård, James Badge Dale, Riley Keough, Beckham Crawford, Michael Tayles, and Isaac Bird

What’s Not There?

• The film moves at a slow pace and is slightly boring

• The plot wanders off and this makes it difficult for viewers to maintain their interest

Verdict

The film had all the elements which would have made it an entertaining thriller, but the numbing plot and uneven pace makes it boring and bleak. The performances are good and the concept is unique. So, the film would be a good watch for thriller genre enthusiasts.
