The movie is a follow-up to the 2011 animation flick ‘Rio’. The title is a reference to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. Most of the flick’s story revolves around the Amazon rain forest.

Also, the movie features comeback voices from the original animation movie. The flick hit the screens across the globe on March 20, 2014, and hit the screens in US on April 11, 2014. The movie was critically acclaimed, and it turned out to be a commercial success also.

Both macaws as Blu and Jewel live in a sanctuary for birds in Rio de Janeiro. These macaws have three children. Blu hates going on trips and adventures, but Jewel is just an opposite. She is more of a happy go-getter. She comes to know that few other blue Macaws have been spotted in the Amazon. Immediately, a desire to find out those macaws creeps into her. She wants to set out on a trip with her family and find those macaws.

Blu does not relish the idea, but as two other macaws join, his spirits soar. While taking flight, the group is spotted by the villain character cockatoo Nigel, who is revengeful. An anteater and an irritating venomous frog are other characters. The frog is attracted much to Nigel.

Blu and his family reach the Amazons and make a surprising discovery. The new macaws are headed by none other than Jewel’s father Eduardo who had been absconding for long. There is a twist in the story as both Blu, and Eduardo, the father-in-law do not get along well.

There is a parallel plot which makes the story really interesting. Tulio, who is an ornithologist, and his wife Linda are on a mission to the Amazons to find their lost macaw.

There is a love-triangle in the movie which is between Blu, his wife Jewel, and her once upon a time friend Roberto.

Like the original movie, ‘Rio 2’ is also colorful with amazing animation that emerges in 3D in the screen. But, there is a dearth to decent humor in the movie. But there is surplus of song and dance, and the choreography is commendable.

The movie formula followed by sequels seem much the same. Variations in the sequels are barely to be found. Movie ‘Rio 2’ is no exception. Sequels bear resemblance to the originals and every movie maker has to be careful not to do so.

Anyways, the movie is interesting for the kids to watch.
