Plot

The film, Ferdinand, is based on the famous children’s book ‘The Story of Ferdinand’ by Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson, published in 1936. Ferdinand is a flower-sniffing bull who celebrates his calm disposition and passive masculinity. His body grows and so does his humanity, unlike the hostility that comes to be associated with a bull. The adult Ferdinand had been voiced by John Cena One of the superstars of World Wrestling and becam >> Read More... , WWE Superstar. Ferdinand causes the disturbance at a flower fair and is transported back to his ranch. He is a bull who is happy smelling flowers than fight, even when he was found in the ring.

Analysis

Ferdinand is an interesting illustration of ‘being yourself.’ Set in Madrid, the farm animals characterize various nationalities: from Scottish Highland bull (voiced over by David Tennant Loved and appreciated worldwide for his role as th >> Read More... ) to German horses. The adventures of adult Ferdinand help him encounter new friends. He receives cheer for choosing not to fight in the film unlike the criticism of his masculinity that is found in the book. The film overturns the preoccupied associations of size, strength, and masculinity.

It rather reveals the subtle nuances of what it truly means to grow up to be strong and powerful. While some choose to be aggressive, others want to avoid the unnecessary pain and suffering caused by the popular bullfights in Madrid. The episode becomes a key element for the comment on how the society is conditioned to reward aggression and suffering over meekness and contentment. The film offers various comic scenes that also become a strong social commentary.

Star performance

John Cena made this film engaging with his voice-over for the character of adult Ferdinand. Other fascinating roles include a calm goat (voice-over by Kate McKinnon Kate McKinnon, whose full name is Kathryn McKinnon >> Read More... ), German horses and mischievous hedgehogs (voice-over by Gina Rodriguez American well-known actress Gina Rodriguez was bor >> Read More... , Gabriel Iglesias and, Daveed Diggs)
