The culminating end to an airport or a train station is one of the biggest clichés of a romantic comedy. Well, in Laggies, the movie culminates not with a run to an airport, but rather a run ‘from’ one. This is a movie that completely transposes the conventions of love that we know today.

The movie begins with the dreary footage of Megan portrayed by Kierra Knightly, along with her friends commemorating their prom night. There is a sudden transition to present day, and we see Megan, who’s now thirty years old, holding a sign outside her father’s office. She meets up with her friends, who all seem to have matured well beyond her. The film then progresses to Megan’s friend’s wedding, where Megan’s boyfriend asks her to marry him. In unadulterated panic, she flees, and ends up in the car lot of a convenience store. It is here that she meets a high schooler named Annika ( Chloe Grace Moretz She is known to be one the greatest young actresse >> Read More... ) whom she befriends after showing off her dubious skateboard skills and purchasing alcohol for Annika’s friends. Needing some time to evaluate her life, Megan hides out in Annika’s house, but is confronted by Annika’s father ( Sam Rockwell Born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, California >> Read More... ), and things begin to get cumbersome when Megan falls for him. She ends up juggling with the life of a teen and an adult, and lags behind in both.

Megan’s impaired side is constantly portrayed throughout the film, and the outcomes of her actions can often be let go with a hug or a joke. When her lack of judgement causes an accident that not only endangers herself, but Annika as well, it isn’t treated as a very big deal. Yes the film does linger on the borders of reason, but it calls on us to take things seriously, whilst there are never any consequences for Megan.
