Astro is a 2018 Sci-Fi movie directed by Asif Akbar and released in the United States. It is written by Asif Akbar and Bernard Selling; produced by Asif Akbar and his co-producers. This movie features Gary Daniels, Marshal Hilton, and Courtney Lynn in lead roles alongside Louis Mandylor Louis Mandylor is a famous actor and film producer >> Read More... , Michael Pare, and more. It is a low-budget film with part of the crew being of Indian origin.

Plot

The movie revolves around a billionaire who goes on a space exploration vacation. When he does go with his crew, he returns by kidnapping an alien from outer space from a planet newly discovered. The movie then shows us how the alien lives on Earth and the secrets it holds of its own. It also involves fighting scenes with gory, definitely not pleasing to the eye scenes, added with sound effects. The violence in the movie is very obscene and almost always bloody.

Star Performance

Kick-boxing star Gary Daniels acts as Jack Adams, the main protagonist of this movie. Although there were high expectations from his fans, due to the movie’s poor editing and directing, fans were rather left disappointed. Action scenes of Gary were maybe properly designed but weren’t keenly edited, so the scenes weren’t appealing at all. Courtney Lynn, as Laura, was by far the only good character in this movie, somewhat being a sigh of relief in this otherwise a hell of a movie. Marshal Hilton was almost a cartoony and comedic villain with little to no character of his own. Of course, the actors themselves weren’t bad, but the movie surely made them seem so.

Analysis

The movie is taken just as any other sci-fi movie with a snail’s pace and near-to-zero plot twists. Moreover, the ‘alien scenes’ in this movie aren’t well edited. To be precise, the entire movie isn’t meagerly scripted, and no positive message is given to the public. If the movie had followed the script the way it was intended, maybe it would have been good, but it didn’t, and that’s the problem here. Most of the movie is pushed with unappetizing resolution and the lack of good action scenes that are expected of a self-proclaimed action movie. There is also a scene that overly sexualizes a female character. The cuts between scenes are also poorly designed, making it hard for the viewers to figure out what is even happening in the film. More often than not, the scenarios presented in the movie are so unrealistic that it is hard to believe and connect with a major part of the movie’s plot. Further, the movie is closed with an open ending, leaving the audience with utter dissatisfaction. The box office of the movie too was a flop, going into losses with the production budget.

What’s There?

● Jack and Laura portray a close father-daughter relationship.

● A somewhat new plot

● Few Indian crew

● Violence

What’s Not There?

● Poor directing and editing

● Too much violence for no apparent reason

● Routine plot

Verdict

With all the poor reviews Astro received, many have stopped watching this movie, and that is quite understandable. With nothing to look forward to in the movie, it is more of a boring watch. Having so many drawbacks, such as editing, directing, action, sexualization of a female character, extravagant and unrealistic scenes, unnecessary violence, and so on, it will probably not be a good idea to go ahead and buy the film and watch it.
