Nicole Maines was born October 7, 1997, an American activist and transgender rights activist.  Before becoming an actress, she was an anonymous plaintiff in the case of Maine Supreme Judicial Court Doe v. Regional School Unit 26, where she said his school district did not prevent him from entering the women's restroom because she was flexible. The court ruled in 2014 that barring transgender students from leaving the school bathroom based on their sexual orientation was illegal, the first such decision by a state court.

As an actress, Maines played Nia Nal in the series CW superhero Supergirl (2018 - existing) from the fourth season. She is the first to portray a transgender superhero on television

Maines was Susan Doe in the historic line of Doe v. Regional School Unit 26, also called Doe v. Clenchy. While Maines was still in elementary school, a classmate's grandfather complained that  Maines was  using the girls' toilet. After the incident, she was banned from using the women's toilet and was forced to use the staff bathroom. Maines and his family sued the school district, claiming that the school discriminated against him. In June 2014, the Maine High Court of Justice ruled that the school district had violated the State of Human Rights Act, and also barred the district from preventing transgender students from entering bathrooms based on their ownership. Maines and his family were fined $ 75,000 following a 2015 lawsuit, with Maines and his family entitled Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family, a book written by Washington Post writer Amy Ellis Nutt. It tells the story of a family that allowed the Maines to become transgender. In June 2015, the Maines emerged from USA Network's Royal Pains program as a young mutant with hormones that could endanger his life. In 2016,  Maines was  one of 11 people listed on the HBO list entitled The Trans List. In the documentary, the Maines and several other people tell their stories of being men and women.

Her character is described as "a woman with a soul that has the power to protect others." The character is a new journalist that Kara takes under her wing.
